VIDEO / VAARWELL - YOU

‘You’ is a rich, dreamlike track which is inspired by the vibrant cultural hub of Cais do Sodré that surrounds them in Lisbon. Their previous EP had Stereogum and Crack In The Road posting in 2015 and they’ve been working on the full length around some shows and festivals since.

Following on from the success of their debut EP ‘Love and Forgiveness’ which caught the attention of notable online publications Crack in The Road and Stereogum, ‘You’ is a rich, dreamlike track which is sure to please existing fans and earn them even more. Warm keys underpin the delicate, ethereal harmonies we have come to expect from Margarida Falcão, whose emotion shines through her graceful vocal work. Minimalistic drums are complemented by subtle clicks and rolls, creating a musing atmosphere in which Falcão’s voice can flourish. To complement the moody, contemplative tone of the single, Vaarwell’s dark and abstract music video features the group sitting in a deserted car park whilst an uncanny, human-sized teddy bear stalks the area. This serves to illustrate the surreal mood of the track, with Falcão staring pensively through a car window apparently unsurprised by the bear’s presence, as if it were a figment of the imagination running wild with wandering thoughts.

Since their formation in 2014, having studied together in the same music production class at art school, Vaarwell have gone from strength to strength. 2015 saw them included in FNAC’s ‘Best New Talent’ compilation, as well as being named ‘Artist of the Week’ by online music platform Tradiio. The trio went on to play at the award-winning Portuguese festival NOS em D’Bandada and more recently the revered French designer Philippe Starck commissioned a track from the group for his exhibition in Groninger Museum during the Eurosonic Noorderslag 2017 festival.

Vaarwell’s name originates from the word ‘vaarwel’, meaning ‘farewell’ in Dutch. However, with the release of ‘You’, and the group’s stunning debut LP ‘Homebound 456’ in March, it will be a long time before we bid farewell to this invigorating Portuguese trio.
