SK Shlomo announces third single from forthcoming solo album ‘Look Away’ explores trauma in stirring, uplifting electronic tour de force
After collaborating with Ed Sheeran, Bjork and Damon Albarn, the record-breaking beatboxer SK Shlomo turns electronic singer-songwriter on his debut solo album Surrender, blending his innovative live-looping and breath-taking beatboxing with epic synths, crushingly honest lyrics and lush electronic layers. With support from BBC Introducing, iDJ Magazine and The Times, the self-produced album Surrender is released on 29 March 2019 with a special album launch party at East London’s Oslo with his live band.
‘Look Away’ is the third single from the project, a pulsating mammoth of huge synths, arpeggiated bass and chopped up vocals, beautifully orchestrated with a passionate and moving narrative, providing a showcase for SK Shlomo’s expertise as an innovative dance music producer as well as lyricist and singer.
“This song is my mantra” he explains. “The whole record is about recovery, and writing this one felt like such a huge energy release. We all look away from uncomfortable or painful truths and the story told in this song is like my ‘spirit of survival’ emploring me to stay connnected by taking a breath, embracing the shame and takeing power from my trauma.”
Since opening up about his struggles with depression during his succesful album crowdfunding campaign, SK Shlomo’s life has transformed. He has been asked to speak on multiple music industry panels about mental health, launched his first tour in 5 years and his monthly live streams #WEARELISTENING have snowballed, featuring guests like Jason Mraz, Kodaline and Bill Bailey talking openly about mental health and creativity.
