STRATEAS CARLUCCI Fall Winter 2019/2020
For AW19, STRATEAS CARLUCCI present ‘DEFECT’, exploring the concept of breakage and repair. ‘Kintsugi’, otherwise known as ‘golden joinery’ is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery, by using a gold-like glue to embrace the fractures, not to hide them. STRATEAS CARLUCCI explores this concept by linking the process with another art form, Collage, which was rooted in European Dadaism in the early years of the twentieth century.
Collage allowed artists to interact with existing materials – anything from newspaper and magazines to maps, tickets and propaganda and photographs – to rip them apart and then reassemble them, creating visually dynamic hybrids. Kintsugi embraces a similar approach of allowing the use of repurposing a broken material, which otherwise would be consider damaged or destroyed.
In a similar methodology, STRATEAS CARLUCCI takes garments, dissects them, and re-builds them to create a collection which is multi-purposed, multifunctional and visually vigorous. Tailored garments are reworked and rebuilt to feature double layered fronts, additional veiled sleeves, and detailing borrowed from other garment categories. By hybridising these garments, STRATEAS CARLUCCI find beauty in mutation, to create items which are compelling and innovative, yet strangely familiar.
Overlayed skirts, stepped hems, asymmetrical cuts and double cuff details, all contribute to the overall vision of the collection. Like Kintsugi, STRATEAS CARLUCCI do not hide the flaws, yet embrace and highlight them, but replacing the ‘golden glue’ with fabric variants, raw hems and skewed forms. STRATEAS CARLUCCI explores further the idea of up-cycling, by repurposing existing garments and fabrics, re-working them in brave and new processes.
DEFECT embraces the broken, the flawed, the scarred; and finds beauty in the process of rebuilding and reimagining.
